Bernd Oppl, artist of the exhibition “Über Nacht” in conversation with Petra Noll-Hammerstiel
The conversation with the artist Bernd Oppl will focus on the one hand on his dioramas shown in the exhibition at FOTOGALERIE WIEN - intimate, stage-like showcases from the Black Rooms series. These are black, claustrophobic miniature interiors equipped with electronics and light, which exist closely with the presence of the various media they house. The new work “I can’t see you laughing” shows a living room scenario in the style of a sitcom, in which the light only comes on with a laugh from off-screen. These are immersive, narrative spaces between reality and virtuality that make us think about perception (patterns) and the relationship between two- and three-dimensionality.
Films by Bernd Oppl will also be shown in the cinema. Some of his models serve as backdrops for his films: Empty spaces are transformed by water, ice or magnetic liquids, for example, which stimulate feelings ranging from menace to fascination.
